But this time around we're calling it,
A Very SANDWICH Christmas
at the fantastic Abrons Arts Center

December 3 through 19, 2009

Thanks one & all. It was great.

A perfect holiday gift for the down-town theater lover

In a celebration of 10 years of successful theatre making, Banana Bag & Bodice re-imagines their classic surreal musical cabaret with new holiday charm. Sandwich is a meaty treat that leaks blood and uses bread to soak it up. This show will make you laugh while forcing you to smell the burning flesh surrounding your merry little soul.

Featuring a four-piece orchestra with original score, Sandwich is a playful, provocative & horrific musical that examines the art of eating and the blind act of consumption during the festive holiday season. Like a disastrous anime cartoon with rambunctious rhythm, A Very SANDWICH Christmas features overstuffed animals offering their moral misgivings to the exaggeratedly grotesque humans that feed them. Full of sing-a-long fun, Sandwich is a compendium of oddities to stuff in your stocking.

2009 PRESS

"revels in the bizarre"
- Neil Genzlinger, NYTimes

"They've made it the perfect pre-christmas snack. Even for those who saw the show its first time around, go again. There's nothing that says holiday like leftovers."
- Helen Shaw, Time Out New York

"Original in every sense, downtown theater troupe Banana Bag & Bodice’s freewheeling cabaret scrutinizes mankind’s carnivorous habits through Christmas food traditions. "
- Alyssa Alpine, Flavorpill NYC

“Stab whom you have to for a ticket:
Sandwich
is play-making at its meatiest.”

- Helen Shaw, Time Out New York

Theater2k review of Panel.Animal

"It's deceptively crisp, remarkably tight, cagily convoluted and curiously refreshing...Sandwich is a tasty treat that leaves one hungry for more." - Robert Hurwitt, SFChronicle

"It's a darkly absurd and satisfying send-up of the so-far futile attempt to declaw human nature." - Robert Avila, SF Bay Gaurdian

SF Weekly write up from '04 - spoiler alert!

"A gruff and fetching investment in absurdist family values and a distorted plea for vegetarianism – or possibly something else entirely." - Robert Avila, SF Bay Guardian

Sandwich is a surreal cabaret, which leaks blood and uses bread to soak it up. With a cast of characters moving on all fours, holding a shiny knife in one paw while washing the other of the evidence. This show will make you laugh while forcing you to smell the burning flesh surrounding your soul.
